The first track from the group's now classic first EP "Get Up and Die," released in 1981 on Mystic Records. This record has been re-issued, with the track order changed, so this may be the fourth track, depending on which pressing you have. The Mentors are an American band noted for its deliberately sexist "shock rock" lyrics. They formed in 1977 in Seattle, Washington and relocated to Los Angeles, California in 1979, where their brand of "shock rock" aligned them with the city's punk rock scene. Their music has developed stylistically over the years from garage metal to hardcore punk to experimental thrash metal. They bill themselves as the inventors of "rape rock," essentially an early 1970s-style heavy metal and punk rock fusion with extremely chauvinistic and perverse lyrics about degrading women. They garnered attention both from noted hard rock acts and pro-censorship movements such as the PMRC, because of their lyrical content (The Mentors were one of the main groups ! cited by the PMRC as an argument for the need for censorship). The band labored on through the 90's releasing a number of LPs. The high profile death of drummer and lead singer Eldon Hoke ("El Duce") in 1997 brought them unprecedented attention. A great contribution from the early 1970s attempt to revive old-time style radio shows. Not only to we get to hear Stan Lee in one of his rare speaking roles, but we are treated to what must have been a very young Mr. Bill Murray as the Human Torch. Characterized by faithful recreation of the original comic book stories, the scripts seem complete with dialogue and plot narration. The story lines presented in this series are self-contained, however, so it's not necessary to be a True Believer to enjoy these well-produced episodes.
