Art has always been an important means of communication for human beings as it allows the artist to present his ideas, thoughts and emotions in a form that is easily understood by many. Art has evolved a lot from the flat and unrealistic representation of figures by the Egyptians to the more realistic and natural looking paintings we are familiar with nowadays. This evolvement towards realism was due to an increased interest in perspective, a subject of much debate amongst the master painters of the 15th century. By using the concept of perspective in their drawings, they were able to accurately represent objects in the real world on a drawing canvas as we are accustomed to see. Painters like Durer and Vermeer tried to come up with innovative ways to master such a concept through the development of mechanical drawing aids such as the camera obscura and grid method. Drawing aids have evolved to such an extent that nowadays they have become computer aided. This is the foundati! on of this project, which aims to investigate if and how 3D models could be used as a guide to assist novice artists in drawing subjects in perspective correctly. This will be demonstrated by developing a 3D model-assisted sketching interface. Given an initial rough sketch of the subject to be drawn, the interface retrieves a set of similar 3D models.
